What the Scope Exam Is, and Why It Matters
Dr. Davis examines the throat using a flexible scope about the width of a spaghetti noodle, placed gently through the nose. It takes about five minutes, causes minimal discomfort, and lets him see the larynx and vocal cords directly — structures that are invisible to a standard tongue-depressor exam. You get answers at the first visit.

From Tonsil Infections to Tonsillectomy
Tonsil problems are one of the most common reasons patients — and parents of children — seek a throat specialist. The good news: they're among the most treatable conditions in ENT. If tonsil infections keep coming back despite antibiotics, it may be time to consider removing them for good.
You may be a candidate for tonsillectomy if:
- 7 or more infections in a single year
- 5 or more per year over two consecutive years
- 3 or more per year over three years
- Enlarged tonsils causing sleep problems or difficulty swallowing
- Chronic tonsil stones that aren't responding to other treatment
Dr. Davis evaluates each case individually. Tonsillectomy is performed at a nearby outpatient surgery center, typically under an hour, home the same day.

Things Patients Want To Know
How long should I wait before seeing a doctor for a sore throat?
If your sore throat is part of a cold and improving by day 5–7, waiting is reasonable. If it persists beyond 10 days, is severe, makes swallowing difficult, or keeps recurring — those are clear signals to come in. When in doubt, call us.
When does hoarseness need to be evaluated?
Hoarseness lasting more than two weeks is the clinical threshold for seeking evaluation — that's the guideline from the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Earlier evaluation is appropriate if accompanied by difficulty swallowing, pain, a lump in the neck, or if you smoke.
How do I know if my child needs their tonsils out?
The standard thresholds are 7 or more infections in a year, 5 or more per year for two consecutive years, or 3 or more over three years. But frequency isn't the only consideration — impact on sleep, swallowing, or quality of life can also be sufficient reason. An evaluation with Dr. Davis is the best way to know.
What is LPR (silent reflux)?
LPR, laryngopharyngeal reflux, is acid that travels up to the larynx and throat without typically causing heartburn. It presents as chronic throat clearing, a persistent lump sensation, hoarseness, or a chronic cough. Because it doesn't feel like typical reflux, patients are often surprised by the diagnosis. It's very treatable once identified.
Is the scope exam painful?
Most patients describe minimal discomfort, a brief sensation of pressure as the scope passes through the nasal cavity, which subsides almost immediately. We use a topical spray to reduce sensitivity beforehand. The large majority of patients are genuinely surprised by how tolerable it is.
