Two specialists handle hearing and ear problems, and the overlap may cause confusion. Here's the practical distinction: audiologists measure and manage hearing function and in many cases, evaluate balance function; ENTs diagnose and treat ear disease medically and surgically. When in doubt, an ENT evaluation first is the safer starting point. We work closely with American Hearing and Balance, a leading audiology group in Southern California with an office right down the hall, that performs testing of the hearing and balance system.

What Happens At Your Ear Evaluation
Dr. Davis and his team examine the ear using a small otoscope and, if necessary, a larger microscope. They may also perform a simple pressure check of the eardrum. In some cases, it is important to check the eustachian tube opening, located at the back of the nose and visualized with a flexible scope about the width of a spaghetti noodle. The eustachian tube is a common source of ear problems, including ear infections and difficulty equalizing pressure.

We work closely with American Hearing and Balance just down the hall. We make your appointment for you or your child and coordinate follow up with a Breathe Clear provider.

Outcomes are meaningfully better when treatment begins within 24 to 48 hours. If you experience sudden hearing loss and/or ringing, call us at (310) 372-0700 or go to urgent care immediately. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
How many ear infections before my child should see an ENT?
The general threshold is four or more in a single year, although frequency isn't the only consideration. If infections affect hearing, speech, or school performance; require multiple antibiotics; or are severe enough to cause a complication, earlier evaluation is appropriate. Fluid behind the eardrum that persists for more than three months is also a standalone reason for specialist evaluation.
What is eustachian tube dilation and is it right for me or my child?
Eustachian tube dilation is a minimally invasive procedure to help improve eustachian tube function when medical therapy has failed. It is often a good alternative to ear tubes. A small balloon is gently inserted through the nostril using a small scope for visualization. The balloon is gently placed into the eustachian tube opening at the back of the nose and briefly inflated. It is most commonly performed under local anesthesia and an oral sedative in our office, although younger patients and some adults require general anesthesia in a nearby operating room.
