SLEEP DOCTOR & SLEEP APNEA SPECIALIST IN TORRANCE, CA

Learn How Our Sleep Doctor Treats Your Sleep Symptoms

Waking up exhausted, snoring that's getting worse, a partner who says you stop breathing, your airway needs an evaluation, not a new routine.

When Snoring Becomes a Medical Issue

Not all snoring is sleep apnea, but sleep apnea almost always causes snoring. Untreated, it raises the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and chronic daytime fatigue.

Likely just snoring:

  • Occasionally, only when congested or after alcohol
  • Partner notices, but you feel rested
  • No gasping or breathing pauses

Warrants an evaluation:

  • Snoring most nights, regardless of position
  • Waking unrested despite enough sleep
  • Witnessed pauses in breathing
  • Morning headaches or a very dry mouth
  • Unexpectedly falling asleep during the day

If someone who sleeps with you has mentioned your breathing, take it seriously. You're asleep. They're watching. Their observation is often the most reliable early warning sign.

Sleep apnea in children looks different

Children rarely show obvious tiredness. Watch for hyperactivity, attention problems, and behavioral changes, often mistaken for other conditions.

  • Loud snoring or mouth breathing during sleep
  • Restless sleep or unusual positions
  • Hyperactivity or difficulty concentrating
  • Bedwetting in a previously trained child

Things Patients Want To Know

Do I need a sleep study in a lab?

No. We provide a home sleep testing device that you use in your own bed. The results are medically accurate and typically available within a few days. Home testing is appropriate for the majority of patients being evaluated for obstructive sleep apnea. In rare cases where a home test is inconclusive or a more complex sleep disorder is suspected, we would discuss next steps.

How do I know if I have sleep apnea?

The most reliable indicators are a bed partner observing pauses in breathing or gasping during sleep, waking unrested despite adequate sleep hours, and significant daytime fatigue. Morning headaches, very dry mouth, and unexpectedly falling asleep are also common. The only way to confirm the diagnosis is a sleep test — which we provide at home.

What's the difference between a sleep doctor and an ENT for sleep?

A sleep medicine physician oversees the full spectrum of sleep disorders and manages CPAP therapy. An ENT addresses the structural causes of airway obstruction that drive obstructive sleep apnea — and can offer in-office and surgical solutions that address the problem at its source rather than just managing the symptom. Many patients benefit from both. If you're struggling with CPAP or want to understand what's actually causing your apnea, an ENT evaluation is the right starting point.

Is CPAP the only treatment for sleep apnea?

No. CPAP and nasal APAP are effective for many patients but aren't right for everyone. Alternatives include a custom dental appliance (repositions the jaw and tongue), in-office procedures like the Pillar procedure (stiffens the soft palate) or turbinate reduction (improves nasal airflow), and surgical options for patients with structural obstruction. The right choice depends on severity, anatomy, and your preference.

Can treating allergies improve my sleep?

Often yes, more than patients expect. Nasal congestion narrows the airway during sleep, and allergen-driven swelling can tip a borderline airway into clinically significant obstruction. Many patients who treat their allergies at Breathe Clear report meaningful improvement in snoring and sleep quality, sometimes without any additional procedure.

Why sleep problems are different in the South Bay

The South Bay's marine layer keeps humidity high year-round, promoting the nasal congestion and mucosal swelling that narrows the airway during sleep. A partially blocked nose during the day becomes significantly more obstructed lying down. Many patients snoring here are doing so primarily because of nasal congestion, a condition that can be treated without any procedure.

Extended allergy seasons, running January through November in Torrance, mean allergen-driven swelling is present most of the year. For patients already predisposed to sleep apnea, this is a meaningful amplifier. If your snoring or sleep quality worsens during pollen season or Santa Ana wind events, that connection is worth exploring.

Santa Ana winds, each fall, trigger acute flares in patients with existing inflammation. Sleep worsening in October or November without a clear cause? This is a common reason.
