Snoring
How We Help Stop Your Snoring
Snoring can be frustrating for both the patient and the patient’s partner. Snoring is caused by a vibration of the soft roof of the mouth, also called the soft palate. These vibrations occur because there is a restriction of airflow in the upper airway, which includes the nose, mouth and throat. Snoring can often seem like a frustrating social issue, but it can also be indicative of a potentially serious health problem called obstructive sleep apnea or OSA. Individuals with OSA actually stop breathing throughout the night. Unlike simple snoring, OSA can cause excessive daytime sleepiness and can put a strain on the heart. OSA is associated with a number of health problems including high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction.
MAKE AN APPOINTMENTTreatment Options for Snoring
In order to properly treat snoring, we need to rule out obstructive sleep apnea. Sometimes this can be done by obtaining a detailed history and performing a thorough physical exam but for some patients, we need to obtain a sleep study which can be done at your home. If your problem is limited to snoring, then treatment options typically involve in-office treatments such as the Pillar Procedure or the use of a small dental appliance similar to a retainer or night guard. For snorers who have trouble breathing through their nose, nasal sprays or even minor procedures to help you breathe better can be helpful. Everyone’s problem and anatomy are different and so we perform a thorough workup to best customize your treatment options.
