Vertigo
The Ins and Outs of Treating Vertigo
Vertigo is a form of dizziness that can cause patients to lose their balance at any given time. The experience is invariably frightening. When a problem arises within the inner ear balance centers, vertigo is often the result. Conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, and Meniere’s Disease all cause vertigo. Vertigo is a difficult experience to describe but it involves the sensation of spinning while being pulled through space. It is often accompanied by nausea or even vomiting. Vertigo can also be caused by more serious events such as a stroke. If you’re experiencing vertigo it’s important to have it evaluated right away.

The first step is determining what is causing the vertigo, which involves a thorough physical exam as well as a test of the hearing and balance nerve that is performed by our partner audiologists at the Institute. Medical therapy is an important part of treatment for most causes of vertigo; however, balance exercises and physical therapy often play an important role as well. In some patients with persistent cases, injections across the eardrum may be appropriate. Surgery is rarely recommended. Since vertigo can sometimes be the sign of a serious condition it’s important to be evaluated quickly once you experience symptoms.
