Surfer’s Ear
Find Out How to Treat Your Surfer’s Ear
Surfer’s ear (also known as exostoses) is a condition where the ear canal is narrowed by small bony growths. The condition can cause water to be trapped and this can lead to muffled hearing, infection and pain. If left untreated, Surfer’s Ear can cause the ear canal to be completely closed off. Once you have a consultation, we can get to work determining if your ear symptoms are being caused by Surfer’s Ear, and we’ll work through a treatment plan that fits your needs and your schedule.

During your visit with us we will get a thorough look at your ear using either a microscope or small endoscope. If Surfer’s Ear is diagnosed and is severe enough that it is causing symptoms, removal of the small bumps in the ear canal is the most effective treatment. Dr. Davis performs this endoscopic procedure in the operating room on an outpatient basis. The surgery is performed without making an incision behind the ear and Dr. Davis does not use a burr or drill. This approach results in minimal postoperative discomfort and fast healing time, allowing patients to get back into the water more quickly.
